English 4 is equivalent to 12th grade English. In this course, students will learn about the long history of Great Britain and its interactions with other civilizations and cultures. They will discover the social and political movements that were taking place while the literature was being written and published and see how that literature helped shape the literature of future times. As well as see how literature can help to change and improve society. This course will help students to improve writing, develop thinking skills, and improve vocabulary.
Students will be provided with The Norton Anthology English Literature book for full credit enrollments andFrankenstein for full credit and semester 2 enrollments
Course Objectives
When you have completed this course, you will be able to:
Lesson 1: Heroes and Storytellers
Students will learn about the birth of England, its early heroes, and its ancient tales.
Lesson 2: The Rebirth of Poetry and Drama
Students will be introduced to the poetry and drama of the Renaissance.
Lesson 3: Philosophical and Political Rebirth
Students will explore the spiritual, philosophical, and political issues of the Renaissance and the Restoration through the literature of those periods.
Lesson 4: The Quest for Truth and Beauty
Students will discover the quest for beauty and the creation of monsters in the literature of the Romantic period.
Lesson 5: The Paradox of Progress: Victorian England and the Modern World
Students will explore the effect of industrialization and expansion on the literature of the Victorian period and the modern world.
Lesson 6: War and its Aftermath: Modern British Literature
Students will examine the effects of World War I, World War II, and civil wars on the themes and creation of literature in Great Britain and its colonies.
