This course examines the impact of human activities on sustainability while exploring the basic principles and technologies that support sustainable design. Students learn about the potential for emerging energy technologies such as water, wind, and solar power. They find out how today’s businesses are adapting to the increased demand for sustainable products and services. In this course, students develop a comprehensive understanding of this fast-growing field.

Students learn the computer requirements and other basic information for the course. They set up files and folders, install the course software, and learn to use zip utilities. They also learn to identify sources of trustworthy information, the definition of plagiarism, and how to properly cite information.

Section 1: Exploring Systems

Students begin their study of designing for the environment by learning the definitions of environment and natural environment, ecology, organism, resource, natural resource, and renewable resource. They define green design, green product, and sustainability; learn about systems, ecosystems, human impact, common negative effects of resource depletion, and common types of pollution caused by built environments. They learn about ozone depletion, chlorofluorocarbons, global climate change, and the greenhouse effect. They learn to calculate a water footprint, a carbon footprint, and an overall ecological footprint.

Section 2: Waste Management

Students learn about waste; stages in the waste management process; and how to reduce, reuse, and recycle. They learn about monofill, biodegradable materials, compost, yard waste, electronic waste, heavy metals, and types of waste that need special handling.

Section 3: Green Energy

Students learn about alternative energy sources, including solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, nuclear, biomass, and biofuel energy. They learn about clean fossil fuel energy and clean coal technology, ways to conserve energy, and the features of smart grids.

Section 4: Green Transportation

Students learn about green vehicles, possible alternative fuels and energy sources, hybrid vehicles, and ways that people can conserve fuel. They learn common ways that people are designing transportation systems that are better for the environment.

Section 5: Green Agriculture

Students learn about agriculture, parts of the agricultural process, ways to produce crops, and ways that farmers breed, feed, and maintain the health of livestock. They learn about aquaculture, integrated multi-trophic aquaculture, property rights, and ways that environmental sustainability laws and water use laws affect property rights. They learn about irrigation; wastewater, graywater, and blackwater; fertilizer, pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides; organic and synthetic products; and benefits of small farms. They learn about the agricultural industry, ways that large farms and industrialized agriculture have affected the environment, and ways that agriculture is being made more sustainable.

Section 6: Green Manufacturing and Construction

Students learn about economic systems and the environment—main types of economies, natural capitalism and how it is different from traditional capitalism, life cycles and industrial production, ways that the industrial revolution and mass production affected the economy and production, and ways to measure the efficiency of production. They learn tips for choosing green materials for making products, ways to practice sustainable forestry, packaging and labeling, and industrial waste disposal. They learn about carbon offsets and green building rating systems and certifications.
